IELTS Reading (Types of questions)

The Reading Module is the second part of the exam. In this page, you will get to know about the types of questions which appear in the reading module. There are total 12 types which are included in reading:

1. Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs)
In this type, atleast 4 options would be given for a particular question, and rest 3 are either irrelevant to the question, not stated in the question or refer to a different topic. We need what is stated and what is relevant.
2. Table completion
In this type, you need to complete the information provided by the passage keeping in mind the headings. The information in the passage is always in sequence.

3. Sentence completion
Most of the times, the answers are exactly the same as written in the question but you have to read the passage carefully, line by line to find out the information related to the question.
4. Short answer type questions
In this type, you can find the answers easily but sometimes, they confuse you by giving similar information in more than one paragraph. We need to find what s appropriate according to the question.
5. Identifying information (True/False/Not given)
In this type, students find it the most challenging task to complete in the reading module. The statement is true if it is matching with the passage. However, the statement is false If it is opposite to the statement. The answer will be not given if the information isn't provided in the passage. Looks simple, but the level is difficult. You can only solve this if you read each and every line carefully with proper concentration.
6. Identifying writer's point of view (Yes/No/Not given)
Identifying information and writer's point of view are almost similar. In the previous type, the facts are written in the passage which we have to find whether they are correct or not. In this type, the passage is written by the author or is narrated by the writer. The criteria is same for both cases. We just have to find whether the statement is with accordance to the passage.

7. Flowchart completion
These questions often occur in one of two forms. Either you may be offered choice of words or phrases. Aur no such choice is offered and you have to pick words from the reading text. In the former case, words used will be more likely to be different from those used in the reading text. In the latter case, you are instructed to use the words from the reading text only as per as the word limit specified. Look at the flow chart. Use filled information in the chart to get an idea of your answer. Read the specific information more carefully and decide on the best word or words to fill the blank.
8. Diagram label completion
In the diagram, usually the processes and procedures are written in the text and are in sequence. The difficulty level might be easy, moderate or difficult. Scan the text for the appropriate paragraph or section. Read the specific information more carefully in order to select the appropriate answer.

9. Matching Heading Questions
In this type, list of headings would be provided for each paragraph and the options would be more than the passages. For example, there are 5 paragraphs and 6 options are provided in the list of headings. You have to concentrate on the main Idea and try not to be distracted by detail or by unfamiliar vocabulary. Generally, the heading lies in the first two or in the last two lines.

10. Matching Information Questions
In this type, different paragraphs would be given in the particular passage. We have to find which information is given in which paragraph. Sometimes, it is easier to find the information. However, the same information is written in more than one paragraph. So we have to read each paragraph properly.
11. Matching Features Questions
In this type, we have to find who has stated which information or which particular detail is given by whom. Most probably, each paragraph contains specific information either related to a person or a thing.
Note : Here, the questions do not follow the sequence of the text!
12. Notes/Summary Completion Questions

This question type may figure in two formats:
One in which a limit of words or phrases is prescribed and you have to stick to the limit ; and the other in which a list of words or phrases is provided in a box  where there are more options to choose from than there are questions.
Note : the words or phrases follow no particular order.
So, these were the types of questions which are covered in the reading section.

In my next blog, I'll be sharing the tips, ideas and suggestions which would definitely assist you in scoring more than 7 bands in reading.
