Idioms for Speaking IELTS

 Idioms are word combinations that have a different figurative meaning than the literal meanings of each word or phrase. It is an expression that generally has a nonliteral meaning. You are not allowed to use idioms in writing. However, you can use idiomatic language or phrases in writing task 2. In this blog post, numerous idioms will be mentioned along with examples that would be convenient for you to learn and can be easily used in speaking, either in cue cards or other sections of this module.
1.) Like cheese and chalk: an opposite person
Example: I and my best friend are like cheese and chalk. She is an extrovert. On the other hand, I am an introvert. 

2.) Once in a blue moon: rarely
Example: Because she lives abroad, she gets to see her parents once in a blue moon.

3.) It's all in the head: imagination
Example: I am not a bad person, it's all in your head.

4.) I have a lot on my plate: very busy
Example: Currently, I have a lot on my plate. So I can't join the party.

5.) A pain in the neck: very annoying
Example: My aunt's child is a pain in my neck. He disturbs me every time.

6.) Time flies: passes quickly
Example: I miss my childhood days. Time flies!

7.) It cost me an arm and a leg: very expensive
Example: My favorite encyclopedias cost me an arm and a leg

8.) Over the moon: extremely happy
Example: I was over the moon when my friends organized a special birthday party for me.

9.) Piece of cake: very easy
Example: Speaking English is just a piece of cake for me.

10.) Drop out: to leave without finishing
Example: I had to drop out from my college because of my father's transfer.

11.) Learn by heart: to memorize
Example: I still remember the poem which we learned in our school because I learned it by heart

12.) Practice makes perfect: to continuously improve by practicing.
Example: Keep trying because practice makes perfect.

13.) It makes my blood boil: to make you very angry. 
Example: The kids were very annoying. They made my blood boil

Note: You don't need to learn tough idioms because this would become a daunting task for you to learn every idiom. Above mentioned idioms are more than enough to learn. You can easily use these idioms in your speaking. I assure you that you can score a higher band if you add these idioms in your speaking accurately.
