IELTS Writing Task 1 BAR GRAPH:How to write a bar graph essay
writing is the third part of the exam which includes two tasks. In this blog, you'll get to know how to write a bar graph essay.
1.) Introduction: Before explaining the graph, we first have to introduce the graph. For instance, what this graph is about, and what we have to discuss in the upcoming paragraphs.
~Rephrasing: Remember, never write the exact line as written in the question itself. Try to modify the statement before starting the essay. This is noticed and counted under lexical resources.
Here are some linkers and sentences that you can use to begin the introduction:
∆ The graph throws up some interesting facts regarding...... [7-8 bands]
∆ The graph appears to reveal some key trends regarding..... [8-9 bands]
∆ The graph depicts/ illustrates/ shows...
~ Data: In the graph, the information is given in different forms. For instance: in Rs, $, £, tons, millions, billions, gallons, and many other units. After rephrasing, Write about the data. For example, The data is collaborated/ calculated in dollars/ in millions.
2.) Overview: In an overview, we write the striking features such as maximum, minimum, similarity, trend, and exception. This is what we explain in detail in the upcoming paragraphs.
For example, The bar graph is showing a downward trend as from year (1989 to 2020) the production of sugar decreased.
Note: sometimes, there are fluctuations in the graph and you cannot describe the trends and it is okay. Your marks will not be affected.
3.) Body paragraph: Here, you have to describe the bar graph in detail that you wrote shortly in the overview.
Note: you can write the same sentence beginnings to start the paragraph as you wrote above.
~ Introducing the first data source:
• To begin the probing....
~ introducing second data source:
• Turning to/ As for the.... It can be seen that... [8-9 bands]
~ Introducing the first major point:
• it is interesting to note that....
• The obvious Trend...
~ For Subsidiary ideas:
• another observable trend is regarding....
~ Successive points:
• first of all.... then.... however (for exception)..... overall
~ introducing exceptions to general Trends:
• Now comes the/ Of course, there is a noticeable exception in that...
• However this has not always been the case...
~ Comparing and contrasting:
• A similar trend can be observed in/ the results for.... however.... reveals a markedly different trend....
• It is clear when looking at the... and... comparatively that...
~Concluding observations:
• on the whole....
• In sum, it is clear that...
Note: only one body paragraph is formed while writing task 1 bar graph.
Therefore, these were the main things that you needed to learn before writing an essay on a bar graph.
